September 2022 Program Briefing

September 15, 2022

Our goal for this inaugural Program Briefing is to centralize communication and share the latest news and activities taking place within the West Penn Residency Training Program.

Congratulations to our PGY-3 residents who have secured fellowships for 2023-24:

In a few weeks, NASA controllers will deliberately crash their $330M Dart robot spacecraft into an asteroid. The half-ton probe will be travelling at more than four miles a second when it strikes its target, Dimorphos, and will be destroyed. The aim of this kamikaze science mission is straightforward: space engineers want to learn how to deflect asteroids in case one is ever discovered on a collision course with Earth. Observations of Dart’s impact on Dimorphos’s orbit will provide crucial data about how well spacecraft can protect Earth from asteroid armageddon, they say.

The residents had a great time at the Pittsburgh Pirate baseball game on Saturday, September 10, 2022. Thank you to Debbie Hoffman for organizing this resident event.

Reminder to get registered for upcoming Scott Alter, DPM lectures. The 2022-23 Calendar is available, and registration is open. For more information, check out our CME page.

  • Dopesick on Hulu. It is based on the OxyContin crisis from several years ago. Michael Keaton is the main actor, and for those of you that don’t know, he is from Robinson township.
  • The GoodFellows podcast, a fascinating conversation on the United States’ relationship with China. Listen here.

Thank you to Dr. Matthew Hentges (Des Moines) and Dr. Saltrick (Scholl) for attending the Annual Career Fair Event. A special thank you to our Alumni who participated as well: Brandon Tullis, DPM (Samuel Merrit in California), Bradly Lamm, DPM (Barry in Florida), and Kyle Peterson, DPM (Scholl).
