My name is Mia Saunders. I was born and raised in North Carolina and spent my formative years surrounded by a family that emphasized faith, education, and service. A deep curiosity for the human body, coupled with early exposure to health disparities in my community, sparked my passion for medicine at a young age. I pursued my undergraduate studies in Biology at Oakwood University, a place that shaped both my academic foundation and leadership journey. During that time, I served as President of the Cancer Awareness Research Association and Treasurer of the Oakwood University Research Association, cementing my commitment to advocacy and scientific inquiry.

After graduation, I continued my academic path at Johns Hopkins University, earning a Master of Science in Biotechnology. My time there deepened my interest in translational research and its power to bridge the gap between bench science and bedside care. I then transitioned into various healthcare roles, including time at the FDA and as a cryotherapy technician, where I witnessed firsthand the power of preventative care and patient trust.

Eventually, I was drawn to podiatric medicine for its perfect blend of surgery, biomechanics, and long-term patient relationships. I enrolled at Des Moines University College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery, where I found my true calling. At DMU, I have been privileged to serve in leadership roles with the Student National Medical Association and the American Podiatric Medical Association, while also pursuing research in diabetic foot complications and biomechanical risk factors for Jones fractures. My efforts were recognized with awards such as the APMA Educational Foundation Scholarship and 2nd place at the Heartland Research Symposium.

Rotating at various residency programs only affirmed my love for this field and my desire to pursue rigorous, well-rounded training. I am thrilled to be continuing my journey at West Penn Hospital, where I will complete my three-year podiatric residency. The program’s strong emphasis on surgical excellence, collaborative learning, and dedicated mentorship aligns perfectly with the values I have cultivated throughout my academic and professional journey. I’m excited to grow in an environment that prioritizes both clinical and personal development.

Outside of medicine, I find joy in baking, HIIT training, tutoring, and cultivating spaces for others to thrive. My ultimate goal is to return to underserved communities, particularly in the South, and to inspire future generations of foot and ankle surgeons through mentorship and education. I am beyond grateful for every experience that has shaped my path and excited for the journey ahead.
