  • ACFAS 2024 Wrap Up

It was great seeing many of our past graduates at the ACFAS meeting in Tampa.  This is always a great venue to catch up with everyone.  We had a well-attended reception on Friday evening.  This was our best attended reception to date.  Jordan Grossman (class of 1996) was recognized for his recent service as president.  Michael Lee (class of 1999) was also recognized for his years of service and counsel.  Dan Shadrick (class of 2011) was installed as our new president.  The 2025 ACFAS Annual Scientific Conference will take place March 27th-30th, 2025 in Phoenix, Arizona.  Please check our website for event details and updates.

  • Annual Alumni Seminar in Ft. Lauderdale, November 7-10, 2024

Our keynote speaker will be Jack Schuberth, DPM. Details are on the “EVENTS” page. There are a limited number of rooms available, so register as soon as possible to secure a room. **Booking deadline is October 4th, 2024.

  • The 2024-2025 Scott Alter, DPM Lecture Series

See the “CME” page for details. This event is now completely remote.  Further details can be found on our website.  These lectures are approved for 4.0 CME contact hours per session.  There will be 6 sessions for the 2024-25 academic year.  This event is sponsored by a generous grant from the Podiatry Foundation of Pittsburgh and is FREE to our graduates.  This is a great opportunity to obtain 24 CME credits at no cost.

  • Radiology Rounds
These have been moved from Friday at 5:30 AM (EST) to Thursday at 6:30 PM (EST). The purpose was to make this event available to a greater number of our graduates, especially those graduates in the central and western parts of the country.  Remember, this is a CME approved event for 1.0 CME contact hours.  This is FREE to our graduates.  This will take place twice every month.

  • Michael Savisky, DPM

  • Clinics in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery (CPMS)

CPMS has invited our group to be featured in a future issue. All the articles will be authored by graduates of our training program.

  • Dan Shadrick (Class of 2011)

Dan was installed as our new President this past February and has been rather busy.  His message is below.

From Our President

It is that time again for another update from our society, and most certainly to wish you all a happy summer.  I know we are all eager to see the warmer weather and hopefully more time on the lake, golf course, concert series, or perhaps the baseball field.  For all of you that I was able to catch up with Tampa, so thankful for your presence and continued support.  For those that couldn’t make the trip, you were missed.  Our annual ACFAS West Penn party in Tampa was another success.  We enjoyed fantastic weather in February and indulged in fantastic food/drink.  Once again, we had alumni and family from all generations attend, including some faces we haven’t seen in quite a while.  It never ceases to amaze me the massive footprint our society and residency family has within our profession, but also across the country.

As you all know, our immediate past President Jordan Grossman passed the baton onto me in Tampa this year.  It has been a whirlwind with drastic and much-needed changes over the past few months and I likely have not shown my appreciation for his service. Therefore, I will take this opportunity.  I first want to tip my hat to Jordan Grossman for once again proving why he is such an asset to our profession, but more importantly an integral piece to our society. He will be missed as President, but certainly abundantly utilized in his current role still on the board as Past President.  Jordan, I want to thank you personally for your guidance and assistance throughout, and always appreciate your willingness to answer the phone when I call for help or just confirmation.  This society would not be where it is without you.

I would also like to give many thanks to Debbie Hoffman for her interim role in keeping the WPFAS afloat after Beth Sheedy’s retirement.  Debbie has selfishly devoted so much of her free time in keeping us moving, all along functioning primarily as the West Penn Residency Directory.  Debbie continues to excel in this role, and it clearly has a symbiotic relationship with the society.   Debbie, I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your work with the Society and praise your continued dedication to keeping us moving.

I also want to announce another major change to our society that has recently been finalized.  I would like to introduce and be the first one to welcome Kelsey Lee as our new Executive Director of the Western Pennsylvania Foot & Ankle Society.  Kelsey has played a vital role as our director of marketing over the past two years.  She has single-handedly brought us into the 21st century by designing and managing our outstanding website.  She has also brought us into a more up-to-date digital world of communication and correspondence, including a social media footprint.  There are too many duties to list that she has accomplished, but I can assure you she has had her stamp on most everything.  With that said, I again want to announce that Kelsey has accepted the additional responsibility of becoming our Executive Director beyond just our marketing expert.  She will be directly involved in our board duties and helping us with developing a highly functional society with more predictable financial stability.  You will likely witness these changes at our upcoming fall retreat.  More to come later.  Kelsey, we welcome you and can’t wait for your skills to be utilized to their fullest.

Along those lines, I want to once again utilize this platform to discuss the ongoing and never-ending concern that our society faces year in and year out…Money.  As I hope you are all aware, our society is 100% non-profit with the sole purpose to support and acknowledge our past residents, as well as provide a palpable foundation for future residents and alumni.  Our society is integral in providing ongoing continued medical education through local lecture series at West Penn Hospital, Journal club, and radiology rounds.  The society also puts together a yearly party to celebrate our alumni at the ACFAS meeting.  Lasty, and of course most notably, our society puts on a yearly Fall retreat where 20 CME hours are provided through keynote speaker lectures and alumni case review. This is free of charge to alumni.   It is also a great opportunity to get together, recreate and catch up.  However, the reality is these events and tasks cost a lot of money.  Frankly, it often costs money that the society does not have.  The society relies almost 100% on alumni donations.  Your generous donations every year keep our society functioning on your behalf. As such, I am here to humbly ask for your continued support through tax-deductible donations and strongly consider giving back to our alumni society. It is extremely easy to donate. Simply, you click on the red “DONATE” tab in the upper right corner.  I would also strongly recommend you choose the “annually recurring” donation option.  This helps the society better budget if we have some sense of what we can expect each year.  It is a win-win for all involved to have a successful and highly functional society that can continue to serve you, its alumni.

In addition to supporting our alumni society financially, I would also encourage everyone to consider attending our annual events.  It is a great way to engage with your alumni and earn some CME credits as well. This year, we will be returning to Fort Lauderdale, FL at the Westin Beach Resort.  Please refer to the website above to get additional details and booking links.  The room rates and links were emailed recently and can also be referenced on the website.  We have a great lineup for typical alumni lectures series and can’t hold back my excitement to announce our keynote lecturer/speaker as the renowned Dr. Jack Schuberth.  It will be a great retreat!  I certainly hope you all can make it this year.  We hope to continue our trend of more and more attendees each and every year.  If you have not yet attended a Fall retreat, I challenge you to come once…I guarantee you will be back.

Again, I hope you all have a blessed summer and look forward to catching up once again soon.

All the best,
Dan Shadrick, DPM, FACFAS

Residency Training Program Updates

As per our comments above, four new residents will be starting with us in July.  This is an outstanding group.  These young people are the top of their class.  They are driven, motivated, and excited to become part of our group.  We are delighted to have them and excited for the opportunity to work with them over the next 3 years.  We will also have four 2nd year residents and three 3rd year residents for this upcoming year.  The structure of the training program has remained essentially the same, with a focus on foot and ankle surgery, rigorous academic training, and research. Allegheny Health Network has detailed information regarding specifics and can be obtained on the GME website: Click Here.  We continue to receive excellent support from Allegheny Health Network.  We have recently had the resident area remodeled and upgraded with new computers, etc. The program continues to grow, especially in terms of surgical volume. Sham Persausd, DPM (Class of 2018), who returned to Pittsburgh 2 years ago, has become rather busy and our residents are participating in his cases.  Our volume will likely increase further with the  return of Mike Savisky, DPM.  Our program continues to be driven by our dedicated core faculty: Matthew Hentges, DPM (class of 2014), Ryan McMillen, DPM and Karl Saltrick, DPM (class of 1989).  If you have specific questions regarding the training program, please contact me either by email at [email protected].

New Executive Director

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting many of you, but for those I haven’t yet met, I’m Kelsey Lee. I live in Johnston, Iowa. Before joining the WPFAS, I worked as an independent marketing consultant with a strong background in both marketing and healthcare. Since 2021, I’ve played a pivotal role in growing the Society’s marketing strategies, spearheading initiatives such as revamping the website, logo rebranding, social media and email marketing, and more. Now, I’m thrilled to take on the role of Executive Director. I wholeheartedly believe in the Society’s mission/vision and its esteemed Alumni members. My goal is to build strong corporate partnerships, alumni engagement, fundraising initiatives, and continued marketing efforts. I am dedicated to driving the organization towards greater success. I’m married to Michael Lee, a WPFAS alumni, and together we have four kids and a Bernadoodle. Faith is the cornerstone of my life, both personally and professionally. I enjoy spending time with loved ones, traveling, and rooting for the Steelers.

Careers & Fellowships

If you are searching for a new position or seeking an associate or partner, please let us know.  This can be posted on our website.  We would also be glad to put this information in this newsletter.  Please forward this information to Kelsey at [email protected].

Corporate Sponsorships

The WPFAS Corporate Sponsorship Committee, consisting of Alan Catanzariti, Michael Lee, and Jeff Loveland has begun work to secure much needed corporate support for the Society.  As part of this, we have developed a structured format for reaching out, engaging, and securing corporate sponsorships and support of WPFAS educational offerings and alumni events.  We have developed a range of opportunities from Bronze Sponsor ($1,000 annual commitment) up to Titanium Sponsor ($20,000 annual commitment).  We are actively working with corporate teams to secure support and we are happy to report we have already received a verbal commitment for a Titanium sponsor!  If you have strong contacts (corporate level – not local reps) with a company you think may have an interest in supporting WPFAS I encourage you to make an email introduction with that contact and myself at [email protected].

Thanks!
Michael Lee, DPM, FACFAS

This is Your Organization

We are excited to have Kelsey Lee as our Executive Director.  She is here to help make this organization successful.  However, she will be depending on your input to move forward.  Please provide her with any suggestions or recommendations that you feel will improve our organization. Please take a few minutes to check out our website. It’s easy to navigate and will have all the schedules, conference information, CME information, and news relating to our graduates. If you have any news to share with the group, please forward this to Kelsey.

2023 Alumni Donations

Thank you to the following people for donating to the Foundation in 2023.  These donations are critical for us to continue to function.  These funds are utilized to support the website, administrate the Foundation, and social functions, including both our Annual WPFAS meeting in November and the reception at the ACFAS.

Closing

“In a word, live together in the forgiveness of your sins, for without it no human fellowship, least of all a marriage, can survive. Don’t insist on your rights, don’t blame each other, don’t judge or condemn each other, don’t find fault with each other, but accept each other as you are, and forgive each other every day from the bottom of your hearts.”
~Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Wishing you all the best.
God bless you.
